USS Paul F. Foster Association
50th Anniversary Reunion
February 20th and 21st, 2026 – Port Hueneme, California

Shipmates and Families,

Our 50th Anniversary Reunion, held on February 20th and 21st, 2026, in Port Hueneme, California, was nothing short of extraordinary. As I reflect on those days, I can honestly say my heart is full. Watching nearly 300 shipmates smile, shake hands, and hug one another was something truly special. For many of us, it had been years — even decades — since we last stood together, yet the bond forged aboard the USS Paul F. Foster was instantly renewed.

Seeing shipmates reconnect, share sea stories, and laugh together was a powerful reminder of why this Association exists. The friendships and camaraderie built aboard our ship are lasting, and this reunion proved once again that time and distance cannot diminish them.

One of the most meaningful moments of the reunion was the opportunity to walk the decks and engine rooms of our old friend, the USS Paul F. Foster, once more. Standing aboard her in Port Hueneme brought back vivid memories — the sounds, the spaces, and the shared experiences that shaped each of us. For many, it was an emotional and deeply personal homecoming.

On Saturday morning, we held our General Membership Meeting, during which members reviewed the status of the Association’s membership, carefully reviewed and edited the Association By-Laws, and conducted our officer elections. I am honored and grateful for the continued confidence placed in the leadership team, as the following officers were re-elected by the membership:

  • Dave Klein, President
  • O’Neal Suire, Vice President
  • Meg Costa, Secretary
  • Jon Powell, Treasurer

Thank you for your trust and support. It is not taken lightly, and we remain committed to serving the Association with transparency, respect, and dedication.

On Saturday afternoon, we gathered for a solemn and honorable Two-Bell Ceremony to remember our lost shipmates. It was a deeply moving moment of reflection and respect as we honored those who once stood the watch beside us and now sail on eternal patrol. Their service, sacrifice, and friendship will never be forgotten.

Saturday evening brought a joyful and celebratory moment as we came together for a festive celebration of 50 years of service, sharing a great meal and outstanding fellowship. The evening was made even more special by the presence of remarkable guest speakers whose words reminded us of the ship’s proud history and enduring legacy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to our distinguished guest speakers, whose presence and remarks greatly enriched our reunion. On Friday, we were honored to hear from Captain Kim Buike, USN (Ret.), 9th Commanding Officer, Captain Anthony “Tony” Holmes, Commanding Officer, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, and LCDR Paul R. Foster, USN (Ret.). Their reflections, insights, and continued connection to the USS Paul F. Foster legacy were inspiring and deeply appreciated.

Additional special guests,
Captain Thomas Strei, USN (Ret) 13th Commanding Officer (DD-964)
LCDR F.G. (Rick) Thorpe, USN (Ret) served on (DD-964) (Association Chaplin)

Family of Vice Admiral Paul Frederick Foster,
Three generations of Paul Fosters joined us, Paul Richard Foster (P3) Grandson, Paul James Foster(P4) Great Grandson, and the youngest PFF descendent, his 8-year-old great-grandson Paul Graham Foster (P5).

Family of Captain George Edward Sullivan III,
Ms. Diana Sullivan

On Saturday evening, our celebration was further enriched by the presence of former commanding officers and senior leadership who helped shape the ship and those who served aboard her. We were privileged to welcome Captain Robert B. Danberg, USN (Ret.), 6th Commanding Officer; Captain Kim Buike, USN (Ret.), 9th Commanding Officer; Rear Admiral Hugh “Denny” Wetherald, USN (Ret.) and LCDR Paul R. Foster, USN (Ret.). Their remarks reminded us of the professionalism, dedication, and proud tradition of service that defined the USS Paul F. Foster and continue to live on through her shipmates.

Special thanks to the 18 Original Plank owners that joined us to celebrate 50 years of Honor, Valor, Service.

This reunion was more than a celebration — it was a homecoming, a remembrance, and a reaffirmation of the bonds we share. To everyone who traveled, volunteered, planned, supported, and participated: thank you. Your presence made this reunion truly special. A heartfelt thank-you as well to our families, whose continued support allows us to preserve and honor this legacy.

The USS Paul F. Foster is more than steel and machinery. She is a shared chapter in our lives, and through this Association, that chapter remains alive and strong.

On behalf of the officers and Board, thank you for being part of this historic 50th Anniversary Reunion. I look forward to carrying this momentum forward and to seeing all of you again at our next gathering.

Until then — Honor, Valor, Service.

Warm regards,

Dave Klein
